Option 1: friends at the head table and two symmetrical tables of honour
This is the solution most weddings reach for today. By sitting with their closest friends or witnesses, the couple no longer have to choose who joins them at the head table.
The parents take the two tables nearest the head table: one to the right for the mother with her family and partner, one to the left for the father with his. Both tables get identical visibility and identical treatment.
Option 2: zoning the room by family
When the families are large, a useful piece of room psychology is to split the room visually into two balanced halves: the mother's side and the father's side.
Each branch shares space with the people they are closest to, and nobody is forced into an awkward crossing during dinner.
The rule that matters most: tell everyone in advance
The biggest mistake is keeping the seating secret until the day. Explaining to both parents two weeks ahead where they will be and the mutual respect behind the arrangement dissolves any bad feeling before the celebration starts.
